Students put Business Plans into Action
Judges praise the endeavour of six teams that took part in MBA Challenge, running projects to raise funds and awareness for Operation Santa Claus.
Students from five leading local business schools produced the most successful business plans, as part of the MBA Challenge for Operation Santa Claus.
Six teams took part in the chal-lenge, which is now in its third year, to raise funds and awareness for the charity drive.
Sticking to a limited budget, the future business leaders had to outline a charitable project to secure donations and then put the plan into action.
The contestants hurdled all barriers and raised a total of HK$356,427 over the past two months and promoted the Opera-tionSanta brand all around town.
The panel of judges consisted of Mark Michelson, senior coun-sellor for APCO Worldwide, Hugh Chiverton, head of the English programme service for RTHK, and May Lam-Kobayashi, head of public affairs for Swire Properties.
The Top Fund Raising Award winner – team mUST Santa from the Hong Kong University of Sci-ence and Technology, raised HK$211,000 by running 11 events in just six weeks.
“We wanted the campaign to pop up in different prime loca-tions in Hong Kong within a short period of time,” said the team leader Janice Lee Yu-sheung.
“It was like rolling a snowball.” Charitable events included crafts workshops for kids and tak-ing photos with Santa.
The members’ vivid and inter-active presentation also won the group the Best Presentation Award.
The Most Creative Business Plan Award went to Team Dream Channel from the City University of Hong Kong. The team shared some meaningful stories in the city to raise awareness and dona-tions in a gala dinner.
“Santa Claus is a symbol that makes your childhood dreams come true,” said team leader Stanley Zheng.
“Dreams must go on! Keep pursing your dream, even if you are now a working adult.”
Members from the CityU team also invited artist Alice Poon to do-nate her paintings for an auction and secured nearly HK$94,000 in donations.
Creative ideas from other teams included a marathon and a sale of Christmas cards, which all impressed the judges. “It’s good to see all work from the students, and we enjoy listening to them,” said Mark Michelson.
Operation Santa Claus is an annual charity campaign jointly organised by the South China Morning Post and RTHK since 1988. This year, the campaign chose 22 charities as beneficiaries.
