Chief Executive Officer of SCMP Gary LIU's Opening Remarks
Good evening, Mr. CHEUNG (Matthew CHEUNG Kin-chung, Chief Secretary for Administration), Mr. LEUNG (Leung Ka-wing, director of broadcasting), distinguished guests, ladies and gentlemen.

A warm welcome to the 31st annual Operation Santa Claus. As you may know, OSC was established by the South China Morning Post and Radio Television Hong Kong in 1988 to connect our local community with highly impactful NGOs that may not be widely known.

Over the past 30 years, our supporters have generously donated over HK$290 million benefiting more than 270 charitable projects covering Children and Youth, Community, Health, Disabilities and other sectors.

There are hundreds of stories I could share with you to demonstrate our community’s impact through OSC, but this evening I’d like to tell you the story of Felice.

Before the age of 13, Felice was just like any other teenager. She loved to hike, swim, hang out with friends and she spent significant time volunteering. This all changed when she was rushed to A&E and diagnosed with Still’s disease, an extremely rare systemic autoinflammatory disorder with an incidence rate of just 0.0006%. Felice’s life came to a halt after the diagnosis. She experienced adverse side effects to the medication she was prescribed, as well as loneliness, depression and even suicidal thoughts.

During her treatment, Felice came across Laughter Yoga, a form of yoga that helps improve joint and muscle movement as well as relieve mental stress, and she realized it could be advantageous for other rheumatic patients. She decided to train as a Laughter Yoga instructor and then approached the Hong Kong Arthritis & Rheumatism Foundation with an idea. Soon after, Operation Santa Claus made Felice’s idea a reality by funding the Foundation’s ‘Arthritis Buddy, Energetic Life’ Laughter Yoga teaching project. Now other people coping with rheumatism and arthritis can experience the benefits of this fun, simple exercise that helps boost both body and mind. For many, this will be a huge step forward in the recovery process.

Our theme in 2018 is ‘Spread some joy this Christmas’. Felice is an inspiration for all of us  as we seek to share joy and happiness to the people around us.

Along with our long time partners who are  here tonight and who have shown incredible support to OSC, we are also happy to welcome new donor members this year, including The Hong Kong Golf Club and the Italian Women’s Association.

Last year alone, we raised HK$16.2 million for OSC. The challenge for us this year is simply to outdo ourselves. With your help, we are aiming to reach over 13,000 beneficiaries by supporting 13 community programs who serve in the areas of career training, education, physical and mental treatments, and more.

As we aim for even greater success, I’m excited to share some unique approaches that OSC donors have designed this year. During the next six weeks, donors are organizing family fun games across the city including a city scavenger hunt, jogging, golfing, squash, and 5-a-side football. So make sure to check on our website, osc.scmp.com, regularly to keep updated, participate in the games and help spread the joy!

It is truly an honor to be a part of Operation Santa Claus. Every year I am encouraged by your passion for serving Hong Kong in such a meaningful way. Thank you for your support and I look forward to a great season of giving and celebration with everyone!
